Phase3D redesigns Fringe Inspection hardware for LPBF integration
Phase3D has redesigned Fringe Inspection, its structured-light system for layer-by-layer LPBF surface measurement, around purpose-built projection, computing and storage hardware.

The new Fringe Inspection moves from an architecture based largely on commercial components to hardware designed for integration into LPBF machines. A custom projector is combined with an industrial PC, GPU, memory and internal storage inside a passively cooled aluminum enclosure.
M12 connections cover camera data, power, networks and I/O, while four hardware trigger channels accept 5–24 V signals alongside software and distance- or light-sensor triggering. The system uses structured light to quantify powder-bed height changes layer by layer. The announcement does not provide production-scale detection accuracy or yield-improvement figures.
Key facts
- Integrates a custom projector, IPC, GPU, memory and internal storage
- Provides four hardware trigger channels accepting 5–24 V signals
- Uses structured light for quantitative layer-by-layer surface-height measurement
Context
The design targets repeatable integration across multiple LPBF machines rather than one-off installations, but its impact still depends on OEM implementation and validation.
