Open-Source Rust CAD Projects SolidCraft and CADCraft Add MCP Agent Control
SolidCraft and CADCraft are open-source Rust applications focused on parametric 3D CAD and 2D drafting respectively, with MCP interfaces for AI-agent operation.

SolidCraft is a parametric 3D CAD application for desktop and browser use, with a built-in MCP server for AI-agent operation. It includes extrude, revolve, sweep, loft, fillet, shell, holes, patterns and assemblies, and exports STEP AP242, IGES, 3MF, STL and OBJ. Its developers describe it as early but usable for simple parts; CAM, simulation and 2D drawings remain deferred.
CADCraft is a clean-room Rust implementation of an AutoCAD-style 2D drafting tool. It reads DXF R12 through 2018 and saves as R2000. DWG is read through the open-source acadrust library and also written as R2000, while unsupported entities are not preserved on save. Its roadmap estimates 29% weighted AutoCAD parity overall, 55% for 2D drafting and 0% for 3D; compatibility with AutoCAD itself remains unconfirmed.
Both projects integrate AI coding agents into development and use automated quality gates such as regression tests for crash fixes. 3D Printing Industry concludes that open geometry kernels and MCP can lower the barrier to CAD development, but manufacturing reliability still depends on robust complex geometry and verified round-trips with commercial formats.
Key facts
- SolidCraft supports parametric 3D CAD, MCP control and STEP, IGES, 3MF, STL and OBJ export.
- SolidCraft remains early-stage, without CAM, simulation or 2D drawings.
- CADCraft focuses on 2D drafting and reports 0% 3D capability on its roadmap.
- CADCraft drops unsupported entities on save, and AutoCAD compatibility is unconfirmed.
Context
The projects demonstrate agent-operable open CAD, but remain experimental; production data requires compatibility testing and independent backups.
